Now that 2020 is firmly behind us, I thought it would be fun to explore what the home design trends for the last decade have been. The last decade brought the rise of the iPhone, Chip & Joanna Gaines, Marie Kondo and a huge selection of décor trends that helped shape the way we design and style our homes. This past decade was about streamlined minimalism and for the most part, the décor and design was no exception. How many of these have you incorporated in to your home?

1. Barn Doors as Closet Doors-Many people removed bifold doors or large doors that swung into precious walk space and embraced sliding barn doors instead. The styles of these varied from farmhouse to modern.

2. Chevron Pattern-The iconic zigzag pattern was found on rugs, pillows, bedding, paint treatments and clothing.

3. Poufs-Why have one ottoman when you can have several poufs? From the living room to the patio, these poufs added character, extra seating and a place to put your feet at the end of a long day.

4. Ombre-the gradual, color changing pattern was brought to furniture, walls, fabrics and even hair.

5. Canopies in Kids’ Rooms-Fort-like canopies add a touch of whimsey to a child’s bedroom.

6. Farmhouse Table in the Dining Room-Thanks to Joanna Gaines, the farmhouse table surged in popularity. Reclaimed wood tables, Windsor dining chairs and the combination of farmhouse style with modern simplicity.

7. Millennial Pink & Hunter Green-subtle pink and dark green were prevalent in everything from paint to textiles and furniture.

8. Bold, Large Scale Patterns and Florals-high energy, statement making patterns and bold blooms and leafy prints were all the rage as people showed more confidence in their individual style.

9. Open Floor Plans-The open floor concept became a coveted architectural feature and requirement for many families.

10. All White-Thanks in part to Chip & Joanna and the farmhouse style, white everything including walls, trim and décor provided the blank slate homeowners craved after the super ornate style of the 90’s.

11. Modern Farmhouse-Again, Thanks to the Gaines’ for their impact on this last decade.

12. Gallery Walls-People will always want to post photos of themselves, their family and their travels.

13. Brass & Gold Hardware-From faucets to cabinet hardware to jewelry, brass is back, baby!

14. Industrial Style-Elements were borrowed from old factories and converted urban lofts. Exposed brick, tall ceilings, concrete floors and bare lightbulbs

15. Gray-This cool, modern neutral color showed up everywhere. Fabric, paint, flooring saw the biggest surges of this color.

16. Mid-Century Modern-After Mad Men finished airing in 2015, this craze really took off.

17. The Marie Kondo effect-But does it “spark joy?”

18. Boho-The jungle meets bungalow exploded in popularity. Think macrame, houseplants and rattan.

19. Edison bulbs-Exposed lighting was all the rage and light bulbs had to look good.

20. Smart home technology-Smart locks, Nest thermostats, Alexa and Ring doorbells made smart technology more accessible and affordable.
