Tile Over Tile?

When considering flooring, one question I hear is “Can you tile over tile?” There are several factors to consider to determine if this is the best course of action for your space.

You can lay tile over an existing tile floor as long as it is in good condition with no major cracks or settling or tiles coming up. It will raise the height of the floor, which might require trimming the bottom of the bathroom door and a step up from the other flooring in the house. You will also need to take the toilet out before installing the tile and replace the existing toilet flange bolts if they aren’t long enough for the added height.

If any of the old tiles are loose, reattach them to the floor, and fill in any missing spots. After cleaning the floor thoroughly, lay the tile with thin-set adhesive. Talk with a professional tile company about your floor before attempting anything. An uncoupling membrane or self leveling compound may be needed to prep the floor surface before laying new tile.

We’ve had success using this method over tile floors that have been set using a mud bed in very old homes. Trying to remove this old tile is very difficult and the prep of the base after the tile removal is difficult once the tile does come up.  When in doubt, hire a professional. You won’t be sorry.
