Top Loading vs. Front Loading
Whenever I am discussing a laundry room layout with a client we always come back to the washer and dryer. There are many ways to make a laundry space function, but you have to start with what kind of washer and dryer you want to use.
Some people love their front loading units. Some people hate them. But they do serve a purpose regardless of your feelings about them. With a front loading washer and dryer set, you can stack them to give you more space in the room or next to a sink. Or if they sit side by side, a countertop could be run across the top of them for more folding space. Another option is to let them just sit side by side in the space which will give you the most flexibility of swapping them out down the road, especially if you think you would ever change to a top loader.
If you have a top loading washer and dryer, there is really only one option of how those can be installed and that is side by side. Ensure that any cabinets that are mounted above them are high enough that the lid of the washer doesn’t bang into them. You could even consider making those upper cabinets a little deeper since the washer and dryer stick out so far. This will make it easier for you to reach into those cabinets.
It’s important to really think through your space as you are deciding on what style washer and dryer to go with. Or if you have a strong opinion on one or the other, to make that known when the space is being designed. What’s your favorite? Top loading or front loading? I want to hear! Questions?
