Decluttering 101

It’s that time of year. The Christmas decorations are put away and it’s time to clean house. January always gives me the itch to deep clean, declutter and simplify life. Whether you are getting ready for a remodel or just getting a fresh start in your existing home, below is a list of questions I have found helpful in the decluttering process.

o Do I really need this?
o Do I love it?
o Do I already have something else that will work?
o Do I use it regularly?
o Where am I going to put it?
o How hard would it be to replace this item someday if I needed to?
o Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation?

These questions give me a good jump start on evaluating if I need to keep something. If I decide to get rid of something, there are several ways to do that.

o Donate to Goodwill or other charity
o Give away to a friend or family member who could use it
o Sell on Craigslist, Ebay or Facebook
o Throw away

Let’s face it-most of us have way more than we need or can even use. All of that extra stuff creates physical and mental clutter. Do yourself a favor this new year and bring some order and peace of mind to your life. Do you have any favorite decluttering tips or tricks? Or favorite ways to get rid of something? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Send me an email at jessica@webbercoleman.com.
