What If I Don’t Like The Suggestions My Designer Makes?
One dynamic I frequently encounter is the relationship between a designer and a client. A client has spent time interviewing different designers to see which one they want to work with, the designer has pulled a plan and ideas together and the client doesn’t like the suggestions. What do you do?
First, make sure you do your homework. Look at the other designs of this designer. Do they fit your aesthetic? Are they all cookie cutter styles or are they individualized for each client?
Second, how do you communicate with the designer? Do they listen to your ideas or are they simply pushing their own ideas? This communication is KEY!!
Third, you’ve done your due diligence and selected a designer, but you just don’t like what they have pulled for your project. BE HONEST! It is your money they are spending, so make sure you get what you want. You have hired them because they are a professional, but make sure you are also getting what you want, not settling for something to avoid the conflict.
Fourth, if they don’t react well to your honest comments, it’s ok to end that relationship and hire someone else. At the end of the day, this is a large investment you are making into your personal space and it needs to reflect you-not the designer.
