Women In Residential Construction Conference

Last fall, I had the opportunity to attend the Women in Residential Construction Conference. Hosted by Professional Remodeler and Professional Builder magazines, about 190 women from around the United States attended this event. It was a great couple of days learning from others in this industry and networking with people who understand what you do day in and day out.

Did you know that women make up only 9 percent of the workforce in the construction industry? We discussed ways to encourage women to get involved in this industry and showing them what opportunities are available. We learned to play poker and how those skills translate into business. We discussed building trends around the US and what it takes to attract different buyers. We brainstormed why it is important to be involved in our communities in other areas besides our business.

As the building and remodeling markets grow, but the pool of available workers shrink, it’s important for us in the industry to know how to market to employees outside of the industry and encourage people to work in this industry. No matter what is happening in the world, houses will need to be built or remodeled. We are filling a need and forming relationships that will last a long time.
